Groupama 3 Jules Verne Trophy Record Attempt - Day 41

March 12, 2010

Franck Cammas and his nine crew are navigating through a difficult zone between a stormy low and the tradewinds of the Saint Helena High. In fact Groupama 3 will have to continue northward for another 36 hours before she can escape this meteorological minefield and pick up the thread of this Jules Verne Trophy again... Each puff of breeze translates as a gain or loss in relation to the reference time!

There are still another 4,500 miles to go before they can get a glimpse of Finistère on the horizon! A sight Franck Cammas and his crew hope to see in eleven days if they are to stand a chance of beating the round the world record! Before all that though, they will have to escape the meteorological minefield, which has held Groupama 3 captive for over a day in shifty and rather unfavourable winds... Fortunately the 10-man crew are 100% focused on doing just that, though it is still tricky to cast one's mind forward some ten days when you're at sea. Whatever happens, the energy and atmosphere aboard the giant trimaran is so positive that the obstacles along the route are but trivial...

March 12, 2010

A 17-year-old from Newquay who took his father's fishing boat out with friends has been fined under the Merchant Shipping Act for running down a small rowing dinghy outside Newquay Harbour.

The incident occurred on Saturday 12th September 2009, whilst crowds were watching the Ladies Gig racing from the harbour wall. Jake Gilbert, of Newquay, took his father’s fishing vessel, the 'Tizzardlee On' out of the harbour with a number of his friends on board. At the same time a small rowing dinghy containing a father and his 8 year old son were returning to shore after having moored their vessel in deeper water.

Team Origin & ETNZ - Exciting Race. A few Mistakes.

March 11, 2010

Bow to bow at the first cross, Ben Ainslie and Team Origin muscled out a small but important lead over their Kiwi opponents on the first leg of the first race of day three. Kiwi skipper Dean Barker and his afterguard had fought for the left hand side, Ainslie and Co. were working to keep control of the right. The tussle brought the pair head to head, time and again up the short and shifty beat in the gusty conditions just off the shore of downtown Auckland. Each time they met, the Brits had squeezed out a few more metres.

"A good start and a bad ending," said Ainslie as he stepped onto the pontoon. "Everything happened very quickly at the end of the bottom run, we made a mistake of trying to do something we could not pull off - a lesson learnt for sure."

Gear failure for Italians against ETNZ

March 10, 2010

Brady, with American tactician Morgan Larson calling the shots, pulled off a risky pre-start strategy against skipper Dean Barker on the New Zealand boat, pushing ETNZ deep into the start box after a dialup but breaking clear with immaculate timing to grab the start he wanted – a port tack cross at speed, right at the committee boat.

Minutes later as they came back together, Brady had a two boat-length advantage that he parlayed into a 22 second lead at the first weather mark. Down the run, the New Zealanders split away and Brady let them go, only to concede the right side of the course when they rounded opposite gates starting the second beat.

Brady’s lead had evaporated but the fight had just started. Half way up the weather leg Mascalzone barely had her nose in front as they sailed into a building breeze when the jib came crashing down. 'That was our race to win,' said Brady. 'And a tough way to lose!'

PUMA International Moth Worlds Day 2

March 10, 2010

Day Two of PUMA International Moth Worlds got to a late start as a foggy haze and light winds lead to a 30 minute postponement onshore.  Today was really a pressure game- those who stayed in the pressure were able to get up on their foils and make gains.  The fleet had three races today, bringing the total for the event up to four.  Races two and three saw light winds and tough foiling conditions.  The breeze filled in a bit for race four, allowing the fleet to really get up and moving.  The leader board remains relativity unchanged, with Andrew "Amac" McDougall still in the number one spot.  After day two, the top five are:

1. Andrew McDougall (AUS)
2. Michael Lennon (GBR)
3. Brad Funk (USA)
4. Scott Babbage (AUS)
5. Chris Graham (UAE)
